Awards

24/04/11
We congratulate our President Laurie Raymond on the occasion of him receiving a service award at the recent Basketball Victoria dinner and presentation evening.  Laurie was presented with a certificate and a pin commemorating his 25 years of service as a volunteer in our own association and others.  Laurie has served the VBBA as score secretary, president, carnival committee member, referee, referee co-ordinator and secretary, along with being present most weeks to coach, support, and even score on many occasions.

Well done Laurie and thank you for what you have done.

ALL STAR Players
PREMIERS / RUNNERS UP AWARDS

The VBBA aims to be an association that is set apart from other associations. Not only do we seek to enjoy good basketball, and aim to make a difference in the way we play the game, we also endeavour to make a difference in our world.

Many players in the past have boxes full of trophies stored away somewhere in the garage collecting dust while others have them proudly displayed on a trophy cabinent in the pool room. Both groups of people teach us some important things in the way we ought to shape our Association and the way we give awards. As we seek to be an Association that follows Christ in His principles, we ought to ask ourselves what is the best way to do this? Even in the small areas such as awards. Jesus teaches against storing up treasures on earth, and to be selfless with our lives. Yet, at the same time there is something in each of us (particulary us competitive sports people) that enjoys the moment of success and there is nothing wrong with celebrating achievement, in fact we probably don’t do it enough!

In our attempt to be an association that gives beyond ourselves and still celebrates achievement we have decided to do away with trophies, and award people of their achievement with a gift that lasts beyond the dusty shelves of our pool room. Each grade has sponsored an organisation and with the finances we would normally spend on trophies, we have directed the money to go towards assisting that organisation to reach young people in a sports related way. Players awarded Premiers, Runners Up and All Stars will receive a certificate outlining their achievement and how their achievement is making a difference in our world.

President's Award 2011 - Roger Cooke
It is a pleasure to present Roger with this special award in recognition of his 15+ years involvement as a player with the VBBA. Roger’s quiet and positive manner are always an encouragement and example to other players, and it is a delight to recognise his contribution to the Association in this way. Congratulations and thanks, Roger!  Best wishes for your retirement.

In recognition of the Award, a donation has been made to the World Harvest Basketball Tours to the Philippines.

Red Dust Role Models a Melbourne based health promotion charity that operates in remote indigenous communities throughout the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tiwi Islands. It uses the profile and influence of positive role models to deliver health messages and inspire healthy lifestyle decisions among disadvantaged, indigenous youth. The RDRM objective is to have indigenous youth enriched through a series of community visits aimed at conveying healthy lifestyle messages.
